Using the below utility, it's possible to migrate domains and user accounts (and their passwords) from IMail to hMailServer. Currently, aliases, lists or messages aren't migrated from your old configuration, so these have to be copied manually if you need them. If you strongly need the tool to copy these objects as well, let me know and I can modify it.

IMailMigrate assumes that you have hMailServer and IMail installed on the same computer. If you do not have this, one workaround is to copy the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ipswitch\IMail from the IMail machine to the hMailServer machine.

When you start IMailMigrate, you can select which IMail domains you want to copy from IMail to hMailServer. The utility will create the domains in hMailServer if they don't already exist.

4.2: http://www.hmailserver.com/download/too ... igrate.exe
4.3: http://download.hmailserver.com/tools/4 ... rate43.zip

Has been tested with IMail 6 and IMail 8.

wow! this is totally awesome! I was wondering, would it be difficult to add the alias and list migration features? Those would be VERY helpful!

Cheers,

Hi I use the normal edition, it stores emails inside Postoffice directories.
In the Postoffice directories are the domains. In these domains directories are mailroot where each email account emails are stored in their individual directories.

Hello,

i like to switch our Imail server with some hundred domains and many Aliases and some lists to Hmail.

Can you add alias (and maybe lists) support to your Program?
(edited: to IMailMigrate.exe)

With best regards
Matti

There are aliases and lists in hmailServer.

But are the aliases and list are being converted by IMailMigrate.exe which is described in this thread?

So my problem is to migrate the aliases and lists from imail to hmail (The amount of lists is not too high, so it could be done manually - but not for the aliases which are widely used by our customers...)

As the aliases are alos in the registry it could be done very simple (maybe it is a little bit more complicate for aliases which root to multiple adresses - but these are mostly used...as I read here before i need a ditribution list for that type of aliases as well)

i see... The way you phrased your question, it sounded like you thought there were no aliases or lists in hMailServer.

If you can export the alias and list info to text files then you can use the COM object of hMail in a VBS to import them. how is your VB script knowledge? I know nothing about this IMailMigrate.exe program though. Sorry.

My VBScript knowledge is basic, but I think I may handle it if I invest enough time.

But as Martin stated "If you strongly need the tool to copy these objects [lists and aliases] as well, let me know and I can modify it." I thought asking here is better then inventing the whole thing from scratch.

Maybe Martin likes to post the source of his program so that I can add the alias feature.

Did I understand it right that hmail needs a distribution list instead of aliases to deliver to multiple adresses?

As Ipswitch once again raises the price for ther service agreement (and this is the only way to get bugfixes & updates) there may be some more people who like to switch to hmailserver the next couple of month...

Just an FYI, the migration tool successfully converts accounts from Imail 7.0 to hMailServer.

Thanks!

Addendum to my previous posts...
Converting from Imail 7 seems to have corrupted some, but not all of the passwords. The password reset seems to have cleared out the problem for specific users, but I have 1600 users. Any suggestions?

If you have too much time Martin... It would be nice if aliasses are also convertable to HMS!

Users should be possible to move using the above tool. There's no tool available to move the aliases. You can use IMAPCopy to move all the messages from the old to the new server, but you will need the passwords for all users to be able to do this. Or reset their passwords in IMail just before migration.

I'll confirm the migration from IMail 7.07 HF3 to hmailserver 4.2.

Here's a more detailed migration how-to:
1. Install HMailServer (latest production release) on the new server
2. On the old server backup the registry settings for IMail HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ipswitch\IMail
3. Install the registry settings on the new server
4. Run the IMailMigrate.exe utility on the new server, only select a few domains at a time, a large number of domains will crash the program…..this will take about 10 minutes
5. At this point you will have the new server will all the accounts present but they are not active and do not have mail

The below steps need to be repeated for each domain:
1. Using the HMailServer Administrator enable the domain
2. Edit the IMAPCopy config file for the domain in question
a. Enter the SourceServer IP for the old domain’s mail server
b. Update the userlist for the domain in question with the syntax “username” “password” “username@domain.com” “password”
3. Run the IMAPCopy utility it will process about one message per second
4. If no errors occur during this process all mail will have been moved
5. At this point load the IMail Administrator and manually copy each alias and distribution list to the corresponding HMailServer domain

Done

I'm running Imail 7.15 on Win2000 and am trying to migrate to hMail 4.2.2 on Win2003.

I have exported and reimported the Ipswitch registry keys (from both the root Ipswitch branch and just the Imail sub-branch). In either case when I run the Imailmigrate.exe Utility I get:

"Could not read list of Imail Domains from Registry"

This occurs even after rebooting the server to ensure that the new registry keys have been included.

*** edit ***
The information does show up in the registry as expected (the complete branch is in place). Also, I downloaded the "Decode IMail Passwords" Utility mentioned elsewhere and it too could not see any domains.

I have quite a few virtual setups - could these be the culprit?

Finally, running ImailMigrate.exe on the orginal installation does pull up the domain list sucessfully.
*** /edit ***

Has anyone experienced similar issues, or have a work-around?

Thanks!

-j

virtual setups can make it tricky, after all the accounts are created you need to manually configure the imailcopy IMAPCopy to point to the ip of the old and new servers...if your running in a virtual enviroment avoid the use of 127.0.0.1 as it sometimes points to the host system.

Imapcopy is not the issue. There is a utility that Martin created to copy the Ipswitch Imail user information from the registry and import it into hMailServer. Imail and hMail have to be on the same machine and it worked before but not now.

MailEnable stores domains in the following structure:

C:\Program\MailEnable\Postoffices\Mailroot\POSTOFFICENAME\ACCOUTNAME

(ie. C:\Program\MailEnable\Postoffices\Mailroot\Joksi.net\info)

Postoffice name is the problem, could be DOMAIN and could be DOMAIN.COM
Messages are with the extension .MAI

Hello everybody,

If you are trying to migrate MailEnable mailboxes to hMailServer mailboxes, the data you need can be found in the following directory or the installation directory of MailEnable Standard version.
Code:
C:\Program Files\Mail Enable\Config

In this directory you can find the following tab-delimited files (plus some more);
Code:
AUTH.TAB   ' Contains mailbox name and password
DOMAIN.TAB   ' Contains domain names and domain aliases
ADDRESS-MAP.TAB   ' Contains mailbox aliases

Now create a script that will extract the information and then use the following script: http://www.hmailserver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2634 to import the extracted into hMailServer.

I have not had the time to create such a script yet, but if you create one please post it :-)

Hope the information can help somebody stuck with MailEnable migration.

HI All,

Just wondering if anyone has had the run-time error I m having using the imailmigrate.exe.

I have copied the reg key from my Imail sever to my hmail server and now run the imailmigrate tool. It starts and I choose a domain and click next, then see a preview, and click next, then the utility grays/stipes out and I get ...

"Run-time error '-2147220503 (800403e9)': You do not have acess to this property / method. Ensure that hmailserver.Application.Authenticate() is called with the proper login credentials.

I don't see a config file for Imailmigrate. Am I missing something? thx

The links above do not work anymore? Our church has an OLD Imail server running Imail 8.15 and we need to get away from it. Any help to migrate would be appreciated!

I want to append my situation here too.
On my Mailserver IMail 8 is running. Old machine, bad performance.

I plan to set up a new server 2003 using hMail instead. There are 5 domains and about 200 Users all over. Maybe some here already have experience: what would be the best way to proceed in my situation?

Greetings, LeMa

Hi,
I have no way of testing or knowing what version(s) this is for as I didn't see any readme/docs but hopefully it helps otherwise martin might need to step in. I found it in the current hmail source so I'd assume it is the latest.

I know this is an old thread, but I had used it for my reference when I started moving from IMail to HMail, so I figured I'd post here. I moved from IMail v8 to HMail 5.3.8 recently, and wasn't particularly happy with any of the solutions out there. They were missing key elements that I needed, such as the ability to not just move accounts but aliases, and be able to migrate the mail data as well. Since there weren't any tools available that would handle all of this, I ended up creating one myself, and thought I would post a link in here to it. You can download it from:

something i was looking for.

maybe some additional help file is available? the program seems to do nothing here when i enter both machines ip and port 143. i get a "conversion complete" though.
also when i copy the imail (8.15) folder to my hmail (5.3.3-B1879) machine (including imail reg) nothing seems to happen.

Dan, why you wanting to migrate to hmail 4.3 in 1st place? Anyway I suspect the tool exists in the old 4.x source but seemed you'd be better served on hmail 5.
