The usual spam settings in hmailserver worked for me reasonably well the past few years, but recently I'm getting 20-30 spam mails a day on my personal account. Thunderbird does a great job, but that doesn't help when I try to read mail on my Android phone. I'm determined to add on some kind of dedicated antispam solution to hmailserver. Since it looked really good on paper, I tried installing ASSP, but it was an absolute nightmare, and I never got all the needed PERL modules. I also wasn't terribly confident in what in essence seems to be a mail server written in PERL. I'm looking at SpamAssasin, but the choice seems to be between a version abandoned a few years ago, or a version that doesn't handle scoring properly. I like the versatility of an open source solution, but I'm at the point where I wouldn't mind spending a few bucks. An ASSP compiled for Win32 would be great, but I haven't seen it.

So, what 3rd party solutions are everyone using?

Are you using Greylisting on hMail?

I use ASSP in front of hmail & use spamassassin too then use hmail rules to route any that make it to that point into "Spam" folders.

I really don't like Greylisting, as it delays my email, which I sometimes use like Instant Messaging. I also worry about some crap, but legitimate mail server not resending messages. Even so, I enabled greylisting last night. I woke up to a 40% reduction in spam, but it's still too much.

so go through these emails, check them against decent dns blacklists, add new blacklists if need be or alter spam scoring to suit. Spammers change the way they work all the time, you need to change the way you detect all the time too.

Greylisting only delays email the first time and is only annoying if you don't use it correctly, such as adding known and regular mailservers to your whitelists. There is no quick set and forget solution to running a mailserver.

Thanks again for the responses. I tried googling some of the IP addresses, but I didn't find it on any lists, except for Project Honeypot, and that's apparently for HTTP Forum spam. My spam level has gone back up to what it was before greylisting, so I'm giving ASSP a second try. I asked the people over at JAM Software about SpamAssasin for Windows, and they said the latest hmailserver beta supposedly ranked SA's spam score properly, so I might give that a try eventually as well.

Hi RChadwick,
I was having a bit of spam problem as well in China but I have use Doom's Anti Spam setting (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15442) and it helps out a lot you should give that a try. Thanks Doom for this guide it works for me. Also you can try to enable spamassassin but you have to go through your spam email score to average out what is your number this process took me three weeks about to get spam down and more stable.

Take a look at the eWall 4.0 SMTP Proxy from http://sssolutions.net/. It has a range of filters, you can create your own to suit your enviroment if one does not already exist. We use eWall to identify spam, then use hMailServers rules to place the identified spam into users spam boxes. You can use eWall to contol Spamassassin. Using Spamassassin through eWall you can easily mark email as spam and then delete those email that exceed a spam score selected by the administrator.
