An alpha version of hMailServer 4.0 is now available for download.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
This version is an alpha and is not stable. You should not install this on a computer where hMailServer is already in use. This version is not yet stable enough to be used in real production. It's only use is to show what new features are available and how they look. It still has several known bugs and it will not work properly. Do not install on a machine where hMailServer is already installed. Hope this is clear enough. :)

Wow, it looks good. Lots of new and cool features.

Can't wait for a beta to come out and play :)

Do you have a list of event triggers available yet? Or have I missed them in admin 8)

Refuses to start the hMailServer service on a Windows 2003 Server. Selecting local DB or remote seems to make no difference.

I installed 3.4.1 on to the server to test if that worked and it did. Specifying remote DB popped a dialog to fill in, unlike 4.0.

I'm guessing there may be a DB acces problem. The server already has MYSQL 4.0X on if that helps. It never has had a prior version of hmailserver.

If you check in the hMailServer Log directory, is there an error log?

Hi Martin,

I should give you some better info to go on.

I have just done a complete uninstall & removal and re-installed your 4.0 build.

I chose to use internal DB Server during build and set the path to e:\hMailServer
When it gets to step "Creating the hMailServer Database" I get a popup error "Run-time error '-2147023843 (8007041d)': Automation error The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

e:\hMailServer\Logs is empty.

If I look at my services list HMailServerMysql has started but hMailServer will not start.

My PC:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.
Intel Pentium III 450Mhz processor x 2, 512MB of RAM.

It also has Apache 1.3, Mysql 4.0.x and PHP installed.

Actually, I haven't tried the phpmyadmin in the latest build so I don't know if it's working. I tried it some week ago and then most of it worked fine.

When do you get the error. When logging on or later?

(as I said, this is not an stable version and you should definitivly not expect anything to work properly..)

Any idea when a beta version will be available?
We are willing to move to hMailServer but the 3.4 is a bit weak in handling virus messages (as you already know ).
Thank you very much.

Uh, weak in handling virus messages? What do you mean with that? :)
I will put up a new alpha today. It will need some further fixing before it can be considered stable.

New alpha available:
http://www.hmailserver.com/download/hMa ... ild-74.exe

A little more stable than the previous version, but still not stable enough to use in production.

Thanx for the alpha ! :]

I've found an error though. I installed the 74 build alpha and there's an error when working with the "External accounts" options.

Here's a screenshot : Image

I get this message when I click on the "Save" button when adding the external account and when trying to Delete the account I added. The mail fetching works nice, I received the mails. After this, If i click on "Ok" , the HMA closes down.

Btw, I've also turned on Logging in options (checked everything), but i dont get any logs in the Logs directory ... Only an error log, when the HMA crashed for the 1st time, like i described above.

Great work with the alpha Martin :)

Fixed all the previous install problems but I also get that same error but when adding an external account to a second user.

One other useful feature would be a "poll now" option on external accounts.

Keep up the great work and look forward to the next alpha :)

Thanks for the external account report. I actually fixed that late yesterday. I'll build a new alpha soon that solves it.

Simply that it would be nice to have Rules also applied to messages containing virus.
Anyway you are really doing a very good job. We are actually using Argosoft (with MailFilter) but I think that as soon hMailServer will be in beta we will stop using Argo.
Any plan to add an order to the rules (e.g. first apply Rule #1 than Rule #2 and so on)?
Paolo

Plive,

About the virus thing.
I was thinking that it might be a good idéa to configure the anti-virus part so that if a virus is detected in an email, an X-HMAILSERVER-VIRUS: 1 header would be added to the email. Then you could add a rule that searches this specific header item and does what you want. I think that would be quite a good and generic solution to that problem. The rules-part would not have to be modified since it already supports searching for custom-header-fields.
So in the virus section, you should be able to chose between
* Delete e-mail
* Delete attachments
* Add virus-found header.

The same thing could be done to the Spam-part. hMailServer could deliver the email even if it's spam, but add a header. Then the user could decide himself whether he wants the mail to be automatically deleted or moved to an IMAP folder.

And yes, I'm going to add support for rule ordering. I'll probably add a "Move up" and a "Move down" button for the filters. My brain haven't yet figured out how to implement it in a good way, but as soon as it's done thinking, it will be added. :)

I like your idea about virus & spam: simple and effective.
About rule ordering I do not understand what the problem is. Can't you simply process rules in the given order?

There's no logical problem with the order. I'm just thinking on how to implement it. It's actually not hard at all. But I like to think for things for a while before I implement them.. :)

I would like to help testing the alpha but only have one machine that is a server and workstation. Is it possible to install two different versions of hmail on the same machine using difference ports or different virtual hosts.

If it is I was thinking I could set my stable version to forward a copy of all my emails to the alpha and use it as the main server. When there are bugs I could fall back to using the stable version and report the bugs.

It is not possilbe to have 2 instances of hmailserver running on the same machine. You can set up a virtual machine and install hmailserver on that one too. You have to use port 25 for you mailserver because this is the port on wich mailservers communicate.

Maybe in a feature version it is possilbe to do it when you can select on which IP hmailserver should listen for mail. But i don't know if martin will make it possible to start 2 instances of the sames service on the same machine.

There will be a new alpha available later today. I've run it for 3 days on my server without any problems now.

:D Many thanks for the quick reply! Will I be able to "upgrade" my existing 4.0 install or do I need to copy my IMAP emails out and do a fresh install?

You can install it right over your existing version. Since version 3.x there is an smarter installer which "uninstalls" the old version first, but keeps the settings untouched. After that run de database updater and you are ready!!

There's a new alpha available here:
http://www.hmailserver.com/download/hMa ... ild-79.exe

This is hopefully the last build before it's stable enough to put up as a beta.

I've installed this alpha, but i got some problems. It seems like, the server fetches the emails from the external POP3 account, but they arent shown, if i connect on the local account with the email client ... Here's a part of the log (i've hidden the pass):

I've checked per webmail, the email is there. But nothing in the email client. Any ideas ?

Martin,

if i enter a 'custom header field' as search criteria in an account based rule the radio button switch back to 'predefined field' after i've saved the rule.
This is the cause the 'custom header field' rule don't work.

hMailServer 4.0 B79 on Windows XP SP2.

Michael

First you wrote
"I've checked per webmail, the email is there. "
Now you're saying that the message isn't delivered. When you wrote "webmail", did you mean your ISP's webmail system or a webmail running towards your own hMailServer installation?
Have you tried restarting the server? To me it looks like the SMTP deliverer in hMailServer isn't running :\

I meant the external account webmail.

I disabled the SMTP service, because I use the ISP's one only. Didnt know it would cause that kind of problems ;). I've started it now and I can see the mail. Silly me, thanks for the help ! :)

Upgraded and so far everything looks good :)

Would appreciate a "poll now" button to force download of external mail as a bit of feature creep for you ;)
