On Server Core: Let setup skip IE installation

Post by prisma » 2012-03-08 10:35

hMailserver is currently not supported on core installations. To be honest, I don't know why. Got it running on Server Core for years without any core specific issues.

The main problem is the current setup doesn't allow to skip IE installation although the only thing needed is .net 2.0 support.
Therefore you type at command prompt:

Code: Select all

Start /w ocsetup ServerCore-WOW64
Start /w ocsetup NetFx2-ServerCore-WOW64
Unfortunately you currently have to josh hMail setup with this registry patch to simulate IE installation:

Code: Select all

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer" /v Version /t REG_SZ /d 8.0.7601.17514
My opinion is: These steps, especially the last one, shouldn't be necessary. To improve the setup in relation to this step(s) should be mandatory.

Isn't the requirement for IE there for a reason? In other words doesn't the admin GUI or some other app need IE to work? I doubt the server service does & could be managed remotely but for some reason I thought there were issues besides getting it installed.

According to Martin, IE6 is required only because the .Net framework requires it (per http://hmailserver.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ie6#p84950 )

I have used the above trick and have no issues with running the Admin GUI or even the DBUpdater.

Thanx Bill for confirming this. But we all have no worries, we know that hMail is running stable on a core installation ;) Only the setup is currently the problem and should be fixed...
