Personal URIBL

Post by palinka » 2022-05-04 00:20

pURIBL (aka palinka URIBL :D )

https://github.com/palinkas-jo-reggelt/ ... ver_pURIBL

The script is built on top of Soren's dynamic black/white list script. (Thanks!)

Basically it works like this:
1) scrapes spam messages (messages with spam score over delete threshold) and inserts URIs into the pURIBL database
2) checks incoming messages against URIs in the pURIBL database

It also comes with a php web admin.

EventHandlers.vbs:

I'm working on an "offline" version that gets called from task scheduler. Its almost done. Anyway, a log is created that contains log stuff, including URIs found in messages. A notification is sent with the log attached.

Anyway, the log attachment is triggering Sanesecurity.Jurlbl.b1c735.UNOFFICIAL in ClamAV so hmailserver deletes the attachment. :?

Is there a good strategery for dealing with this OTHER THAN dumping jurlbl from freshclam?

Offline version now up on github. What it does:

1) Loops through messages in user defined HAM and SPAM folders.

1a) If HAM folder, it inspects messages younger than (user defined) N days for links that match the pURI-BL list. If a hit is found, the message is fed to SpamC for bayes training as spam and the message is moved to the spam folder.

1b) If SPAM folder, it inspects messages younger than N days. If message has spam score greater than delete threshold, it inspects the message for URIs and adds them to the database.

2) Creates custom spamassassin rule "pURIBL.cf" and puts it into SA config dir.

3) Writes debug output to file and emails it to user (which hmailserver+clamAV+sanesecurity promptly deletes due to virus detection    )

Run nightly from task scheduler, preferably before any other script that results in restarting spamassassin so the custom rule file will be loaded.

You can build your own DBL easily if your like. dns.he.net support subdomain.
For example:
dbl.mydomian.com NS ns1.he.net
dbl.mydomian.com NS ns2.he.net
.......
Then add A record:
phishing.com.dbl.mydomian.com A 127.0.0.2
hacker.com.dbl.mydomian.com A 127.0.0.2

I was looking for something like that but they all were too complicated for me. I'll check it out in the morning. Thanks.

I just had a look (was drinking beer last night :D ) and he.net appears to be no different than my current dns service - dynu.com. I can add these records already. The question is, how do I return an answer without a dns server installed on my side?

At your hmailserver,DBL,you add dbl.mydomian.com
Just try it. You can easily have your own DBL just like: dbl.spamhaus.org

I get that. But somehow, I need to answer the request. Also, its not just a domain, its a full URL:

Code: Select all

bad.domain.tld.dbl.mydomain.com
https://bad.domain.tld/some?other_gibberish/in+a.url.dbl.mydomain.com
Those records have to be individual zones? Do URLs have to be url-encoded? How does hmailserver transmit SURBL requests? This is the stuff I don't know about.

I just did some reading at surbl.org and it appears that only FQDNs are checked. NOT URIS. This is an important distinction because there are some legit FQDNs that host bad content. For example, google forms and google docs.

My pURI-BL looks at actual URLs for exact match AND domains for partial match on a URL.

All bad urls get recorded and the "main domain" gets recorded as domain. Main domain means the TLD as parsed from the public suffix list plus one level down. You have the option of short circuiting the main domain if it appears to be sufficiently spammy (that is subjective and up to the admin - but its usually an easy decision). Short circuit means if the domain is found as a partial match on a URL, the message is marked as a spam hit. This way you can have legit domains AND bad content listed from the same domain.

I don't think this is possible via dns query.

I think DBL checks something like: bad.domain.tld.dbl.mydomain.com
I only block the main domain and subdomain, you can build your own dns server too.

Now that I think about it, I could roll this together with my "catchspam" database. I just have to figure out how to script adding and deleting zone records. And I could even offer it publicly, because there's no impact on my server at all. :D
