Install Internal mail server only

Post by maxx4072 » 2022-09-23 14:37

Good morning, Please forgive my ignorance if this is the wrong place to post this question. I want to set up a hmail server for internal mail use only. This will be used in an isolated network with a single active directory domain. I don't want to send any mail externally or receive any email from external sources. Can someone point me to the correct documentation or make any suggestions for the setup.

Thank you

It can be done and been done many times before.

You simple need a Authoritative DNS-Server in your LAN Network like BIND or Microsofts DNS-Server.
If you are not able to implement the DNS-Server Zone for your local LAN, ask an Admin which knows howto setup
a Authoritative DNS-Server.

Not really... If this is going to be "Internal mail server only" then emails do not leave the server and server always know own domains!

IMAP/SMTP connections can easily be done with IP addresses as it is INTERNAL.

smtp servers know of their own existence and therefore do not need an mx record.

Yeah, nice. A SMTP-Server which doesn't serve clients, makes total sense^^

SMTP doesn't need to know about the clients. Mx records point to the server and that's what the ip address is for (as Soren said).

No, the MX record points to an A record which points to an ip.

By now, you should really know how this works.

I do. And i know how to recognise pointless arguments.

Op had his answer and given two options. He can take either the complicated way or the simple way. It's his choice.

(Why you want to argue with anyone about pointless technicalities heaven only knows. There's enough of that going on around here - you of all people should understand it achieves nothing but animosity).
