Can't get it to work

Hello,

I'm new to hmailserver and I have a windows server 2016 and a domainname. I wanted to get a email address for my domain: info@domain.

I set it up and the server is regestring all the message from a external email address and it says it was recived how ever I never see it in the inbox of my info@domain. Also I'm not able to send emails the server is not reciving it at all so maby it can be the client but I don't know what I did work if that is the case.

so how have you configured your firewall on your windows 2016 server ?

My firewall is setup to open port 25 for in and out and I have a lot of other ports set open

Have you set up your ip-ranges properly in hmailserver ?
( like one for internet allowing to reach your server )

config looks good..
you have internet range configured and on that part it says to "accept traffic"
you have smtp configured on port 25 within hmailserver ..

it is your server .. saying that your server on 85.215.81.231 is not responding on port 25 ...
reboot ?
try again ..


Do you have another service in your win 2016 server trying to steal port 25 ? ( local mailservice of some sort )

I just rebooted, but I still can't send or receive emails. The mysql database does register the messages in the hm_messages and the delivery queue saw the messages come by. I still have not received any email in my external email and not the email address I setup up with hmailserver

go into logging see to it that you start smtp logging

can you mail locally inside your server?
try to mail from hotmail gmail ?

.. what is your smtp log saying

Be patient.
Maybe its Graylisting.
It can take up to 72 hours before a new domain is seen as valid for deployment (new in terms of a SMTP-Server).

There are some specifications, demanding the availability of such accounts.
It could impact your overall rating if you don't have such email accounts.

Something like this:
FAIL
Acceptance of postmaster Mailserver rejected mail to postmaster. Mailservers are required by RFC822 6.3, RFC1123 5.2.7, and RFC2821 4.5.1 to have a valid postmaster address that is accepting mail

This is not your specific problem but as a warning, I saw where you have a Default Domain specified. This is not considered wise from a hacking standpoint. It eliminates one less thing a hacker has to guess such as what Domain the User portion of an email address is. Meaning all the hacker has to guess is the User Portion of the whole email address (ex. only 'username' instead of 'username@domain.com').

You should go back and select 'Advanced' in hMailAdmin and remove the Default Domain entry.

Also, apparently you were forwarding the email sent to info@thomasbrants.nl to an email account on Outlook.Com. You also stated you couldn't find the email you implied you sent to info@Thomasbrants.nl when you went looking to see if hMailServer had received the email. I can't confirm this because I didn't see your Forwarding configuration but by default when forwarding an email message a copy isn't retained on the forwarded email address on hMailServer unless you specify it to keep a copy of that forwarded email address. So if this is the case this is why you probably didn't see the email on hMailServer and of course you didn't receive the email on the Outlook email address because your hMailServer was on Spamhaus' Block List.

Or maby better my client is not seeing them in my inbox

If by info@domain account, you mean info@thomasbrants.nl on your hMailServer, then you didn't understand what I wrote above about forwarding email through hMailServer.

Without seeing what your Forwarding configuration is for info@thomasbrants.nl, I have to assume you are using the Default setting for Forwarding which will not leave a copy of the email in the info@thomasbrants.nl email account. If you want a copy of the message in that email account you have to specify on hMailServer under the Forwarding Tab of the Email Account info@thomasbrants.nl that you want to 'Keep original message'.

Something doesn't look right in your log messages meaning that we are not seeing all the log messages. I remember from the earlier part of this thread you didn't have all the Logs turned on which is why we are not seeing all the Log entries. With all the Logs turned on, we should see where the email message sent to info@thomasbrants.nl is indicated as "Forwarding message".

I would suggest you turn on all the Logs. Check again that you have 'Keep original message' selected. Resend your email message exactly as you did before. Then show us all the Log Entries for sending this email message. Confirm your info@thomasbrants.nl did or did not receive the email message (meaning copy was or was not kept). Confirm that your Outlook Email Account also received the email message as you did before.

i had to test out a redirect of my own just to check MY log against Your log.. and.. your log seems fine ..
in my interface my "redirect user" has 0.001 MB stored .. is your info@"yourdomain".nl users dir empty ??

no my dir had 0,043 mb. I've tried thunderbird but I keep getting "login to server is not possible. probably an incorrect configuration, username or password", but they are all correct I think.

It works I've got all of my other e-mails to. The IMAP doesn't encrypt my password and I thought it did, but I can't change that on the standard windows 10 mail client. But I still can't send emails. What are the correct settings for thunderbird for my smtp server? Now I have:

authentication method: password, unsecured

I looked at your All Logs Entries again.

I'm not positive of this but it looks like your Logs indicate the info@thomasbrants.nl email message was deleted. Look near bottom of your last set of 3 Log entries above. Those last 3 lines seems to indicate to me that the email message on hMailServer was deleted after it was forwarded to the Outlook email account.

This would contradict the Forwarding set up you showed us earlier. I tested the same process on my server and I successfully left a copy on the forwarded email account and I didn't have the entry in my Logs which showed the forwarded account message Deleted. However, I am not an IMAP user so I don't know what may happen if info@thomasbrants.nl is stored in an IMAP Folder. My understanding is IMAP Folders do not Delete items on the Server.

A bit of a warning unrelated to the problem. I noticed you are not using connection security on your client connection to your hMailServer. You really should be using Security Encryption on your Client connections. For your TCIP Ports you have specified for Connection Sec 'None' on all your Ports. You should at least have security specified for Ports 993 (should add this Port) and 587. Of course this would necessitate having a Security Certificate. You can obtain free Security Certificates from Let's Encrypt good for 90 days and Renewable.

Just notice something I believe is incorrect in your Server Settings for your Client Setup which pulls the info@thomasbrants.nl email account.

You have I believe the wrong server name specified for the Incoming IMAP Server. The Server name you have specified is thomasbrants.nl. It should be smtp.thomasbrants.nl. hMailServer performs the function for all Protocols (POP3, SMTP, and IMAP) in the one server. Therefore, you should use the same Server name for both Incoming hMailServer and Outgoing hMailServer.

One thing puzzles me though is that you should have gotten a Client Error when it attempted to connect to Incoming Server thomasbrants.nl as that Server doesn't exist as far as I can tell. But this could probably account for why you can't see your info@thomasbrants.nl email message for hMailServer.

Change your Incoming Server name on your Client to smtp.thomasbrants.nl.

I believe you problem is on client side, i am sorry i dont know how to check thunderbird and settings .. or win10 native mail client ..
i agree with jim.bus try to use smtp.thomasbrants.nl as both incomming and outgoing.
even though you have configured an IP for the "record you are asking for"..
thomasbrants.nl. IN A 85.215.81.231
( which made me look at something else.. that i will try to explain furter down.. )

When you point a MX record to a CNAME, you’re in fact inviting double the DNS traffic to your DNS servers.
To resolve the CNAME, the sender’s DNS server will have to perform a second query.
Not only is that inefficient, it is in fact explicitly prohibited by RFC 2181. https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2181.txt i know some say it should work.. ( but as you propabally well know ,,, should.. and DO WORK is not always the same ..)

i suggest that you in your dns change to:
smtp.thomasbrants.nl. IN A 85.215.81.231

Thanks for helping it finally works both ways. Only my mail client say that the certificate is not correct or something, but I could exept it or something. I don't know I it's important?

To further clarify the DNS MX Record.

An MX Record can point to a CNAME record. The RFC does require that it point to an A Record, though. But for years I did use a CNAME record as the hostname of my Email Server and never had any problems. The RFC I believe forbids it because presumably in most cases it does cause extra work on the DNS Servers. I believe there was also some mention (if memory serves me correctly) there could be a problem in that somehow the CNAME Record might resolve to more than one IP Address. I have since changed my MX Records to point to A Records which are in the form of a subdomain hostname where the hostname resolves to the IP Address of the Email Server.

There is no need for more than one hostname for the Email Server in the case of hMailServer since it performs all the mail protocol functions of POP3, IMAP, and SMTP.

Therefore since you have defined an A Record of smtp.thomasbrants.nl pointing to the IP Address of your hMailServer. That one MX Record is all you need to point to your hMailServer's IP Address. If you make the change I indicated in your Email Client for the Incoming server name, your Email Client should work OK unless the MX Record is somehow formatted incorrectly but from your prior post it sounds like it will work OK.

As far as your Certificate showing incorrect, most likely the cause is because your mail Certificate Common Name or Subject Alternate Name (SAN) does not include the Email Server hostname smtp.thousandbrants.nl. Therefore the Client thinks it is the wrong server. I use Outlook and when that situation existed for me, Outlook always just wanted the user to confirm to go ahead and use the incorrect Certificate or to cancel the use of that Email Server. You should replace that Certificate with a new Certificate which includes your Email Server hostname smtp.thousandbrants.nl or change your Email Server hostname to a hostname which is included on your Email Server Certificate.

And as a suggestion if in fact you do have a Certificate for the Email Server, as I indicated before you should be using Security Encryption on your TCPIP Ports because as you have your Email Server now, your Client Connections are not Secure Encrypted.

You cannot use SSL/TLS if it isnt enabled.
Check the Docs regarding installing a SSL-Certificate.

And the docs keep saying there is a Settings -> Advanced -> Security tab, but I don't see it.
