problem and unknown cause

Post by titanius81 » 2020-06-02 16:45

hello everyone, I state that I am new to the use of this software but I have discreet network knowledge. I installed the server on windows 10 normally following the guide and documentation that I found on your site. I set up the domain I own and I entered an email account with the associated domain. Also in advanced and TCP / IP I entered my local ip of my server for each port, imap, pop3 and smtp. I opened the ports of my router and I don't use firewalls in fact all the ports used are open regularly and nested for the local IP of the server.

It doesn't actually work and I don't understand the cause. I have created a new mx record for my domain but the server does not seem to communicate with the thunderbird client. I created a domain name that through a type A record points to my dynamic ip address of my internet provider.

in the log file I find the following lines:

"APPLICATION" 11872 "2020-06-02 16:23:03.724" "Starting servers..."

Also in advanced and TCP / IP I entered my local ip of my server for each port, imap, pop3 and smtp.
Why not first try with the defaults? Really can't understand people sometimes, why on earth you would change default (working!) settings and start off with changing TCP/IP settings :?:

Where in the documentation did you read that changing the TCP/IP settings was required?
Ah, wait....you probably didn't even read the documentation.

I would suggest you do clean install/clean database/settings, and start with reading the documentation on basic configuration

Anyways, the above log snippet has nothing to do with "it" not working, that's just the server starting

i only read about installing it. The ip in tcp / ip have been changed only to try since with 0.0.0.0 by default I always have the problem.
I entered the log lines because I thought there was some clue that I am missing.

I will try to do a new installation and be careful of the documentation. I'll let you know the outcome

591/5000
I was able to start everything even by changing the TCP / IP entry as before. I was wrong to enter the server name both inbound and outbound on thunderbird. now everything is ok as shown by diagnostics:

The x character replaces the exact value for privacy reasons

Test: Collect server details
hMailServer version: hMailServer 5.6.7-B2425
Database type: MSSQL Compact

Test: Test IPv6
IPv6 support is available in operating system.

Test: Test outbound port
SMTP relayer not in use. Attempting xxx.xxx.com...
Trying to connect to host xxx.xxx.com...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 82.57.xxx.xxx on port 25.
Received: 220 xxx.xxx.com ESMTP.
Connected successfully.

Test: Test backup directory
Backup directory C:\Program Files (x86)\hMailServer\Backup is writable.

Test: Test MX records
Trying to resolve MX records for xxx.xxx.com...
Host name found: xxx.xxx.com...

Test: Test local connect
Connecting to TCP/IP address in MX records for local domain domain xxx.xxx.com...
Trying to connect to host xxx.xxx.com...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 62.211.xxx.xxx on port 25.
Received: 220 mik.ns01.biz ESMTP.
Connected successfully.

Test: Test message file locations
Relative message paths are stored in the database for all messages.

Test: Test IP range configuration
No problems were found in the IP range configuration.

Now of course I get the emails but I can't send them. If I run the command telnet mail.hmailserver.com 25 obviously it does not connect. I also tried with SMTP Relayer of my email address and it seems to be configured correctly, however using thunderbird I can't send email

You can't connect to telnet mail.hmailserver.com 25?
Maybe you're outbound port is blocked by ISP? In that case use the outgoing mail relay from your ISP

I created a second level domain name for free to try your server, if everything goes well I will buy a classic domain. How can I find the data to configure my provider's outgoing mail?

Are you sure port 25 is blocked? Is it open in firewall? Looks unlikely to have outbound closed but inbound open as you can see in the mxlookup tool above

yes I'm sure because I don't have a firewall, the windows one is disabled and then I use other services like ftp, sftp, vnc I know how to open the ports in the router. port 25 if I do an online test it is open to me, on the other hand in the diagnosis port 25 is ok

Code: Select all

Test: Test local connect
Connecting to TCP/IP address in MX records for local domain domain xxx.xxx.com...
Trying to connect to host xxx.xxx.com...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 62.211.xxx.xxx on port 25.
Received: 220 mik.ns01.biz ESMTP.
Connected successfully.
any solutions?

That's common here. My residential service has outbound closed and inbound open.

Edit - forgot he's in Italy. Same may still apply.

if I run the telnet command mail.hmailserver.com 25 I can't connect, but if I run telnet out.alice.it 587 I can connect without problems. why?

out.alice.it is the domain name of a service I subscribe to (not as an internet provider but only as an email)

Also can't I make use of other ports to be able to use the output channel?

Relay through smtp.telecomitalia.it?
You might need your ISP account details to login...dont know how and what telecomitalia.it needs/requires, ask your ISP.

usually when you sign up for an internet subscription, they also give you an email. I could have used that mail for my outgoing smtp server. In my case I have not received an email associated with my internet subscription and therefore I don't know what to insert in the smtp field. i am trying to contact their customer service but i can't cause covid 19

This is exactly your problem, outbound port 25 is blocked, so you can send out on 587 (out.alice.it) but not on 25, which is required to SMTP to SMTP conversations, eg: operating a mailserver
Did you even try smtp.telecomitalia.it as relay, or find another smarthost address for that ISP? Or does it need uname/pass?

If he is in Italy then port v25 IS LIKELY BLOCKED inbound. I know. Had it myself.

Also this proves nothing:
Test: Test outbound port
SMTP relayer not in use. Attempting xxx.xxx.com...
Trying to connect to host xxx.xxx.com...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 82.57.xxx.xxx on port 25.
Received: 220 xxx.xxx.com ESMTP.
Connected successfully.
Run the test again and do not change the domain or blank anything. (Who don't know you haven't connected to yourself with incorrect setup of dns).

I tried to insert mail.smartmailtim.it, port 587, TLS and in fact it is resolved as a name in the hmailserver. In thudnerbird when I send mail it is marked as sent regularly, only that nothing arrives to the recipient. With smtp.telecomitalia.it the domain name is not resolved giving me an error.

ok i will try this other diagnostic method. But I just want to remember that when I enter various names of various suppliers for outgoing mail, I see that the IP marked as diagnostics is associated with the server which I entered in the smtp relay field

Don't do other domains - we are not interested. Don't change ports - we are not interested. Just do what is asked.

if I follow this advice
Run the test again and do not change the domain or blank anything. (Who don't know you haven't connected to yourself with incorrect setup of dns).
that is to leave the smtp realyer field empty I get error sending the email, I can only receive and return at the start point. From to the incoming email i get this message "Message undeliverable"

if I follow this advice
Run the test again and do not change the domain or blank anything. (Who don't know you haven't connected to yourself with incorrect setup of dns).
that is to leave the smtp realyer field empty I get error sending the email, I can only receive and return at the start point. From to the incoming email i get this message "Message undeliverable"
Why don't you do as asked??! No one asked you to try sending emails again! You were asked to run the diagnostic and post the results. You are making this WAY more complicated and tortuous than it needs to be. We all know the problem and solution but need YOU to do what is asked to confirm.

Last chance... then I'm done.

I spoke with the customer service of my internet telecom provider in Italy and they told me that it is not going because they only use port 587 with authentication and no encryption

Is it possible that I have to use port 25 to send emails?

No.

We all knew it, but needed you to do the correct tests to prove it. (Took a while).

You cant go picking and choosing random ISP-supplied relays because they will require authentication or one of their connections; unless you are their customer, you will NOT have authentication.

Use the relay provided by your ISP with whatever port they tell you to. Dont use Tim, or Fastweb, or Libero or any other unless they are YOUR ISP.

The good news is that your inbound port 25 is not blocked.

Code: Select all

telnet mik.ns01.biz 25
220 mik.ns01.biz ESMTP
quit
221 goodbye
(assuming mik.ns01.biz is you and 62.211.102.33 is your correct ip address). If it is then I presume you are actually with Alice so use their relay as supplied by them.

emailservers on internet talk via SMTP port 25 to each other
mailservsend.jpeg
.

but since your port 25 outgoing traffic is blocked .. "you are not on the SMTPserver internet.."

unless you.. realise you should use your isp as relay OUT ( if they let you mail from your "own" domain out )
homemailservsend.jpg
if your isp does not not let you mail out with your own domain you have to find someone on the internet that provides the services outgoing smtp ( propabally pay for it )

perhaps you get it

yes the picture sux

All these news that you have listed me, I know them all and I know that to solve I have to rely on paid SMTP servers. I would not want to do this because I regularly pay for a subscription and I would like to be able to use the mail server regularly. On the vps servers that I own through dovecot, postfix etc., I can send mail regularly. So I know very well that I can solve the problem through their relay and by doing various tests even though I know that smtp.tim.it is the same that they gave me (it is from my provider), so it took me time to give the various results and that you thought I didn't understand. Now since I need a user and password for authentication I can't configure correctly, because I think I should have a username and password associated with my phone line. The test I did with port 587 returns me ok 220 because even if I do not enter my username and password, hservermail always connects, the problem remains with the mail client that if I leave the mail I send as ok on port 587, the email I send back to me in the form of an undelivered message.

I hope I made myself understood, everything else is to be learned and maybe I can't understand what you mean to me

yes .. ok .. :D lets not write anything you know then .. .. and you know it all ?? 8) :D
and I know that to solve I have to rely on paid SMTP servers. I would not want to do this because I regularly pay for a subscription and I would like to be able to use the mail server regularly. whay a pity you did not explain all this to us ... because we stupidly tried to help you based on what information you gave us... we should have understood that you already knew everything and that you already had a solution..
Now since I need a user and password for authentication
.. but you knew that already ?
I can't configure correctly, because I think I should have a username and password associated with my phone line.
here it is getting tricky .. perhaps it is a language barrier .. "i think" and "i believe" is very different from "i understand" and "i know"
The test I did with port 587 returns me ok 220 because even if I do not enter my username and password, hservermail always connects, the problem remains with the mail client that if I leave the mail I send as ok on port 587, the email I send back to me in the form of an undelivered message.

earlier you have written you cant send mail .... in my world that means you get an SMTP ERROR saying you cant send and it does not go next hop.. into NEXT mailserver ..

Sooo.. the relay mailserver accepts your mail ( you wrote: i send as ok on port 587, problem solved.. why are we writing here ?? ) ????????????????
and sends an undelivered message back at you ????????, but then it NOT OK ( so inside that mail it tells you the problem )

oohhh maaan how can we tell if you know at this stage.. or if you are guessing, im a bit lost here ... should i write or not ... :? :?

I hope I made myself understood, everything else is to be learned and maybe I can't understand what you mean to me
no - yes - perhaps do you know ?
:?

IF you get a "undelivered notice" of your sent emails from your ISP ... it is very likely that your provider knows why it is undelivered... i doubt .. no no :) let me refrase it .. i know 8) .. that testing ports will not solve that ...( you sort of past "the port" issue if they accept your mail )

Ok I apologize to everyone if I have been very arrogant but I assure you that I am not. There will certainly be a language problem since I am Italian and I try to write in English as best I can.
Let's put it this way, I would not want to pay for additional services and I would like to be able to send mail from the server through your software. Now, if there is any test to do that you recommend, I will do it and post the results.

I'm glad my thread aroused so much interest, I didn't expect it

i took your italian question and put it through google translate .. i
Salve ragazzi, qualcuno che è riuscito a creare un server mail con hmailserver con linea di casa telecom? Perchè ho il problema della posta in uscita sulla porta 25 come da errore comando telnet mail.hmailserver.com 25.
your isp has blocked port 25 outgoing for your dsl line because of fear of spammers.. they most certanly provide you with a way to send mail out ( perhaps via SMTP on port 587, with/without authentication .. ) what else information is provided by your ISP regarding sending mail out through their relay server ?
Siccome adesso tutti richiedono un accesso oltre che usare il loro server come smtp e non avendo associato nessun account sul mio abbonamento non riesco a configurare correttamente il realy d'uscita.
is there no information on how your provider will let you mail through their mail relay server ?
Ho provato ad usare vari smtp con autenticazione, porta e crittografia giuste ma ovviamente vengo bloccato perchè per quei smtp usati non sono riconosciuto,
if you used the right credentials: smtpserver settings, authentication and port settings .. what does the SMTP log say ?
perchè credo che debba possedere mail con quel dominio.
sometimes the ISP does not accept if you mail with emailadress from you own domain, or have certain other rules that apply.. (perhaps you need to setup dns and mx and spf in certain ways .. ..)
Is the ISP ok with you.. realying your email, with your own emaildomain as from adress ?

those are questions you want to know answers to ..

no no .. no tests ..
i took your italian question and put it through google translate .. i
ok for this
your isp has blocked port 25 outgoing for your dsl line because of fear of spammers.. they most certanly provide you with a way to send mail out ( perhaps via SMTP on port 587, with/without authentication .. ) what else information is provided by your ISP regarding sending mail out through their relay server ?
They have already provided me with this smtp.tim.it port 587 with authentication but the problem is that i do not have the authentication credentials.
is there no information on how your provider will let you mail through their mail relay server ?
Since my provider owns alice, virgilio, tin, tim (mobile) and telecom, on the web and on their pages there are all the parameters for those who have these emails as accounts but not those for subscribers of adsl or fiber
if you used the right credentials: smtpserver settings, authentication and port settings .. what does the SMTP log say ?
For the log are you referring to the hmailserver log or diagnostics? if I use smtp for example alice (being a subscriber with @ alice.it account) while inserting the credentials the diagnostic part says ok and thunderbird marks me the mail as sent only after a few minutes I get the unrecognizable message.
sometimes the ISP does not accept if you mail with emailadress from you own domain, or have certain other rules that apply.. (perhaps you need to setup dns and mx and spf in certain ways .. ..)
Is the ISP ok with you.. realying your email, with your own emaildomain as from adress ?
If I had to set the records in another way, I would have found some web page explaining how to do it and nothing instead. I contacted my supplier via pec and I will get an answer within 2 or 3 days I think. The operator on the phone gave me the same information that I already knew and that doesn't work.

Ask them! They will advise you.

You might not need one and authentication is automatic by virtue that you are already in their line. (Quite common).

There are thousands of people simply setting their servers to point to their isp supplied SMTP server relay and asking their isp for the help (details) if needed. Why on earth are you finding this concept so difficult?

You haven't provided any smtp logs from hmailserver showing the problem either.

I am reffering to the Hmailserver Log, set it ( at least ) to include TCP and SMTP
try to send a mail and show us coresponding lines from the log

thunderbird logs and behaviour i secondary .. you need to produce SMTP logs from your mailserver

I'm sure I'm going to make a bad impression, I'm sure that in the logs I make some configuration errors and I have not kept in mind the easiest way but I try to repair the mistake. Here are the details

There you go. Simple (and not unknown) . Something that should have been able to determine from the ISP support desk/ pages or posting the logs at the beginning within 3 posts.

Seemingly you can only authenticate with isp supplied email addresses and you can only send mail FROM those addresses through their relay.

You will need routes and rules:

Route 1:
Name: Luca
Authenticate user: luca@tim.it

Route 2:
Name: Marco
Authenticate user: marco@tim.it

Ecc.

Then set rules:

If fromaddress contains 'luca@tim'
send using route
"Luca"

If fromaddress contains 'marco@tim'
send using route
"Marco"

ecc.

No

you are connecting to the emailserver: smtp202.alice.it and you are authenicating with the emailuser: petitomichele@alice.it

MAIL FROM:<prova@mik.ns01.biz> does not match authenticated user name"
you authenticated to the relay with "petitomichele @ alice.it."

"petitomichele @ alice.it" is not "prova@mik.ns01.biz"

You want to run some sort of business domain and email out from your residence. You cant. There are restrictions in place that make it difficult to do so. If you want to runa business domain then you will need to start paying or looking for alternatives but your curent HOME DOMESTIC adsl is not going to let you. You need to sign (and probably pay for) a hosting or relay service OR pay to upgrade your adsl to a business class line.

in hmailserver configuration you add 1 relay route out ...
( use their Relay server with their provided user for authentication )
( just like you have configured relay with alice.it ... except that alice.it dont let you use your own domain )

Dynu.com let you use your own domain as "from" address

But you could set up your own SMTP relay service on a vps somewhere else if you know what you are doing ...
perhaps there is a free vps provider where you can install a SMTP relay server of you own... sell the service to other italian DSL users

do I have to delete the values from the smtp relay to use routes? How can I use my Alice account for routes?
In the 3 fields: General, addresses, delivery? what should I enter?

before selling I have to learn well what I'm doing, then i would solve in free way and the i take the idea for external services as dynu or vps

My bad using language a bit flimsy

only use SMTP Relayer
SMTPrelayer.jpg
it tells your mailserver to send everything out VIA the provider you configure there ..
( YES you delete whatever you have there right now )

ROUTE
you use if you have SPECIFIC deliveries out for specific mailrecipient that accepts specially .. ( you could use it specifically for YYYYY@alice.it/XXXX@alice.it/ YYY@tim.it and so on ) since they accepts you sending XXXXX@alice.it emails ...
check what jimimasey wrote in earlier answer above

YOU know this.......

you need an SMTP OUT RELAY service
for example duny.com has one ... it costs money to use it..

SMTPD
what comes into YOUR mailserver

SMTPC
what goes out from YOUR mailserver

you post from log SMTPD lines...
so .. you mailed from your local client into your local hmailserver ..

BUT it seems you still TRY to use your private domain as sender through alice.it ............ ( you know already alice.it will NOT accept this ? , so that will end up in delivery queue inside your hmailserver and you will get an undelivered notification after a while)
( you missed in your configuration that your "alice.it"-ROUTE still needs to authenticate )

ROUTE is used when you based on sending as an alice.it emailuser, send via a specific route
xxx@alice.it authenticate as xxx@alice.it route traffic .. ; yyy@alice.it authenticate as yyy@alice.it
already explained here: https://www.hmailserver.com/forum/viewt ... 15#p221219

I see 2 items for authentication:
1) it is located in SMTP -> delivery of e-mail
2) it is located in SMTP -> routes -> alice.it -> delivery

Now i only configured number 2 and left number 1 blank as you said.

perhaps you could use the "transactional package":
https://reachmail.com/pricing/easysmtp

if you sign up "today" you get 10.000 bonus credits for free
and then the cost 5$ for 10.000 email credits .. and its valid for 2 years
not a bad deal ....

I managed to send the emails through and fortunately with sendinblue with a free account and 300 emails per day 8) 8) 8) . Now I have to learn the other interesting things about software like spam and ssl certificates etc. etc. Obviously I'm waiting for response from my internet provider. Thanks for the invitation to the site you linked to me but as you know I was looking for a totally free way and that my provider would provide me with the right credentials
