SMTP Relayer Authentication Setup

Post by Pertzis » 2020-07-23 21:18

Hello everyone,

I recently started to get into Email Server hosting with hMailServer, so please excuse me of my knowledge level. I first tried to send an email from my email server to a Gmail account I own. I then check my inbox and see that my email bounced back, with the error message: "530 SMTP authentication is required." My guess on how to fix this is to navigate to Settings > Protocols > SMTP > Delivery of e-mail and check the "Server requires authentication" box. Now, my two questions are as follows: (1) What exact details do I need to enter to enable SMTP Authentication, and also (2) Am I missing any other steps to make my email server compliant so I can send emails from my own server to my Gmail account?

Your help would be gladly appreciated.

Thank you!

you have unfortunately missunderstood .. something is already asking for authentication .. youre guess is towards enabling it "again" not resolving that you dont authenticate
with more info regarding your problem you get better help ... what server is saying "530 SMTP authentication is required." yours ? the relay servers ? Gmails ?

do this..
https://www.hmailserver.com/forum/viewt ... 20&t=30914
post in this thread ..

and post what is in your SMTP log ( at least TCP/IP and SMT enabled )
ean post from error log if there is something in there ,..

Re: SMTP Relayer Authentication Setup

Thank you for your response.

I ran the VBS Script on my computer, as well as enabling logging for my SMTP. I have attached both logs.
The "530 SMTP authentication is required" error came from the Gmail server. My guess is that my SMTP Server isn't authenticating at all, if that's even possible.
I am also using a DDNS, which I know is a bad idea, but I am just using it for testing, and I don't plan to use this as my main option, although I don't know if this is causing any problems.

Here are my 2 logs which I have pasted in:

first your local client on 127.0.0.1, authenticates into your mailserver 127.0.0.1 and "sends mail" into your mailserver
then you mailserver adresses itself on outside IP 94.64.87.168 trying to send email supposingly to google but connected to itself ?
( and to do that your mailserver asks (itself) for authentication to deliver to external part )

oh my oh my...

have you somewhere added an "record" ( in hosts file, own dns or similar ) that your own mailserver uses to "reach gmail" have you in your firewall som kind of quirk setup to send mail "back into itself" port 25 -> always send traffic to: "internal net, ip of mailserver"

suggestion: check external firewall so the settings are correct... if that is not the problem look into NAME resolution

Re: SMTP Relayer Authentication Setup

Post by Pertzis » 2020-07-24 14:40

I think I found the problem. My SMTP Relayer settings are wrong.
At first, for the SMTP Relayer, I tried to log in using an account from my email server. I thought these were the correct details to write in there. However that didn't work, as it sent emails back to myself.

I then tried to switch my SMTP Relayer settings. I made my settings correspond to my 2nd gmail account, and surprisingly, the email sent without problems. However, I received the email on my personal account with the sender's name being the one account I used to login to the SMTP Relayer.

My question now is with what details do I need to "login" to the SMTP Relayer so my email server account can be shown when I send emails????

!! POINTS TO LOCAL DOMAIN !!

Search your diagnostic report for that string - you will see the problem.
5.7 on test.

Thank you for your help.
I read the article you sent, it helped me alot. However I have another problem. I have set my SMTP Relay with the Gmail SMTP server and it works, but when I try to "Add another email address I own" on Gmail, it can't connect to my SMTP server. I have added exceptions in my firewall, as well as port forwarding. Am I missing something?

I have not used Gmail services like that so i might not be the right person to respond to that question ( i have no clue where or what you are reffering to in their system )

but i guess...
for Gmail to "pose" as you .. there has to be services working.. ( Gmail wont let you just make up a mail-domain or use someone elses .. )
so you bought a domain, you have configured DNS and pointed mx to your mail server so Gmail knows IP wise how to connect to your SMTP server ?
and your ISP lets traffic in on port 25 to your server ? ( im just guessing Gmail would come in on port 25, or do they IMAP connect or something, has to say in their interface .. ?? ) and you have checked that your local server is reachable from the internet on all services needed ? ( check via https://mxtoolbox.com/ )

To clarify, you are trying to SMTP forward to gMail using multiple gMail accounts, is that correct?

If so

Use routes + global rules
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.
