I found this on Hacker News. The Reddit poster disappeared shortly after and so did his posts...
>As many of you know, DNS for FB services has been affected and this is likely a symptom of the actual issue, and that's that BGP peering with Facebook peering routers has gone down, very likely due to a configuration change that went into effect shortly before the outages happened (started roughly 1540 UTC). There are people now trying to gain access to the peering routers to implement fixes, but the people with physical access is separate from the people with knowledge of how to actually authenticate to the systems and people who know what to actually do, so there is now a logistical challenge with getting all that knowledge unified. Part of this is also due to lower staffing in data centers due to pandemic measures.

Right now there is NO Facebook on the Internet ... Imagine how many apps have "login with Facebook" ... Vodafone in Czechia is down due to users DDoSing recursive DNS resolvers. Vodafone in Romania is the same.

It's spreading like a virus ...

Fcuk Facebook ... The problem is the many other systems relying on Facebook Authentication :!: They are all trying again and again and again and again ... until the next DNS server is overworked and dies.

Maybe ... If I was IT God at Facebook I would have a "dead mans button" I could press that would remove Facebook from The Internet if Facebook had a breach.

Unfortunately I don't believe this to be that case ... It's a user error that fcuked up the BGP tables. Now Facebook have to spend millions of $$ to fly people from east to west and west to east to fix the problem.

Problem is that Facebook has become to big and too involved in our every day lives.

Mobile phone companies will be crying. All those free sms texts they gave away with contracts thinking they won't be used now being called upon and costing them money. 😂

I don't really envy Facebook Engineers having to build a skeleton BGP network by hand so they can make the "network" repair itself. You can't rush this either, the smallest mistake and they can start over.

And it gets worse for fagbook...

RT:
⚡️Personal information of over 1.5 BILLION Facebook users reportedly UP FOR GRABS on hacker forum

The breach could potentially enable cybercriminals and shady advertisers to target internet users around the world.

Privacy Affairs reports that:

▪️Data contains users’ name, email, phone number, location, gender, and user ID.

▪️Data seems to be original.

▪️Personal data was obtained through web scraping.

▪️It can be utilized for phishing and account takeover attacks.

▪️Data allegedly new from 2021.

This reportedly constitutes the biggest and most significant Facebook data dump to date.

The only thing i know for sure is that my information is not part of that supposed data dump because i don't use fakebook. :D

Last one.
At 4:00 pm ET Fortune estimated the company had lost roughly $60 million in revenue since the outage started or approximately $216,000 per minute at the peek of the blackout.
So we're supposed to believe that a momentary interruption that caused $60 million in losses ended up causing 100 times more drop in value to its founder? That tells me the revenue has very little to do with the stock price. The loss of a few hours of hoovering up half the world's data - which evil governments around the world rely on - is far more destructive. The stock price slap is a reminder that stoopidberg better not fuck up again.

Oh yeah, i forgot. There was no double blind peer reviewed gold standard fake news imprimatur attached to it, so it can't possibly be true.

Along those lines, i read that telegram and signal made giant userbase gains yesterday as people realized they should make their communication more anti-fragile.

There's always email. Despite its flaws, nobody can knock email out of service without taking the whole internet down.

Hackers Warn That If Demands Aren’t Met They Will Reactivate Facebook

Tech
October 4th, 2021 - BabylonBee.com

WORLD—With Facebook down, and the world basking in the warm glow of a post-Facebook utopia, the hackers responsible for the attack are now warning that if their demands are not met, they will reactivate Facebook once again.

"We know the world is celebrating the peace and unity brought about by us deleting Facebook from the internet," said a cryptic message broadcast from an unknown location. "But if you don't comply with our demand for $700 billion dollars by 8 pm tonight, we will restore Facebook and unleash its evils upon the world once again."

"NOOOOOOOO!" screamed everyone in horror at the thought of being doomed to once again scroll through Facebook's clinically addictive interface, depressing newsfeed, and angry arguments with Aunt Guthrie. "Please! PLEASE! Make Facebook stay gone! Don't let it come back!"

"8 pm tonight. $700 billion," responded the hackers with a maniacal laugh. "Don't disappoint us."

According to sources, local woman Aunt Guthrie is still sitting at her desk clicking "refresh" over and over.
