Cannot send mail via client

I had my hmailserver account setup, with local domain I have made
I am using windows and running the services on my PC (not windows server)

first of all my test logs:

basically it takes the information from the json file into the program, such as host name etc.

trying to run the program with my local ip shown on the website inside 'host' in json results in:

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond *my_ip*:25

trying to put 5.189.183.138 in 'host' :

'The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: SMTP authentication is required.'

also inside hmailserver -> ip range -> require smtp authentication, everything is unchecked except 'external to external email adderess'

trying something else can result in no host found..

Why you trying to connect to mail.hmailserver.net ? (It probably doesnt exist but certainly has no relevance to anything).

This (from the server):

is no surprise (doesnt really prove anything beyond confirming Hmailserver service is running). You have effectively said "can I connect to myself?"

However, this:

tells you that your machine is not contactable from the WAN. This is likely to be due to firewall and/or port forwarding not set in your router, or even whether you have the necessary DNS records setup. Work through that - you will find your answers in that page.

I checked my domain with intoDNS , everything is ok except :

MX Error MX Records Oh well, I did not detect any MX records so you probably don't have any and if you know you should have then they may be missing at your nameservers!

In cmd i did :

If you are attempting to connect to hMailServer by using an External Public IP Address such as I see you referring to in your Postings not only do you have to open Port 25 in Windows Firewall but you must also Forward Port 25 on your Router Firewall to the Local IP Address of the PC running hMailServer.

You don't necessarily need any MX Records in DNS to be able to send email. MX Records in DNS are set so you can receive email from other email servers.

There is SO MUCH more to running a mailserver than simply installing the software and opening ports on your router (with instruction).

You need a valid SSL certificate, and not a self signed one
You need SPF, DKIM and DMARC records
You need RDNS to match your local host name
You need valid DNS records - not simply an IP address
You need ....MUCH MORE

When you think that you have all of the bits that you think is possible, start running some online tests, especially including Open Relay tests.

A lot of inexperienced users unwittingly become Open Relays, without understanding what that is, or why it has happened. These are EXACTLY what spammers try to find and exploit (normally really easy to exploit due to low level of knowledge of users who operate them).

Providing a email address to an inexperienced user, who is likely to become a Open Relay though ignorance, really is a lot like leaving a sign saying 'back in two weeks, key under mat' on the front door of your house.

Anyhow, try these online tests, and make sure that you at least pass them all

You NEED to firewall ban every spam attempt.
You NEED to offsite backup your data dir to a free file sharing service.

If these things don't exist, its assumed the sending server is malicious because spammers (often) don't use these tools, because they can't be spoofed.

Check the email which went to your SPAM Folder. There may be indications on it which say why. You may have to look at the email's Internet Message Headers to find some of the indications. The email went to your SPAM Folder because the receiving email Server or the email Client which received the email thought it looked like SPAM. Perhaps your IP Address is on a SPAM Blacklist, etc. Some of the reason why the Receiving Email Server might believe your email looked like SPAM are because of the things mattg was indicated to you that you needed to have set up such as SPF and DKIM, etc.

Additionally, if the test email you sent to yourself you sent through hMailServer, then you should also look at hMailServer's Logs to see why it marked your test Email as SPAM. hMailServer though does not deliver email to your SPAM Folder. Email is reputation based. If you attempted to connect to my server without mx, spf, and other minimum reputational items, you would be instantaneously firewall banned forever. Because you're a spammer, or at least behave like one.

Technically, you don't need any of that stuff to send mail, but practically, very few servers will accept mail from you without them.

You need a public domain. You can’t host a public domain yourself. Entering a domain in hmailserver is not enough.

There are thousands of domain resellers. Depending which top level domain (e.g. .com, .net, .org) and reseller you choose, you have to pay more or less money.

So get a public domain, create MX, SPF and DKIM records and host hmailserver on your server.

Because you aren't authorized to register Domains that the World (Internet) knows about. The Internet does not know your 'Local Domain'. You actually haven't even set up a Domain on your Local Network. You really don't have a 'Local Domain'. The 'Local Domain' as you call it seems to be the one you named within hMailServer which isn't creating a Domain. The function of adding a Domain in hMailServer is to merely tell hMailServer what established Domain you are going to use with hMailServer. There are situations where you can set up a Domain the Internet does not know about but your usage of this 'Local Domain' isn't one of those situations. Therefore when a Receiving Email Server tries to check your SPF and DKIM it can't find your 'Local Domain' because it doesn't exist on the Interenet. Hence the term 'Local Domain'. You could host your own DNS Server but you don't know how to do this and neither do I. Your Domain also does not run on the Domain Registrar's Server. It may be defined on a Name Server which you don't have. It is far simpler just to buy a Domain on a Domain Registrar who will host the DNS Server for you. As I said earlier, too, Domains are cheap to buy. One of my 5 Domains only costs around $15.00 (US) per year if memory serves me correctly.

Ok thanks everyone for clarifying, thinking of it, domain is not even a problem, I could use temprary email domain and extand it every time, I have tried it
the thing is im using this for mostly studying and testing, ofcourse if things get more serious in the future I will use propar domain and setup

so lets say im using one of those free domains you provided, I just have to put it in hmailserver domain list? and I will be able to setup MX, SPF etc?...


thirdly, Im not even sure it is domain issue, running this test http://multirbl.valli.org/ on my domain name gives no blacklist while running the the ip shows 8 blacklisted (out of 187 tests)

A mail server run by a NOOB is dangerous, as they ONLY ever end up spewing spam, either by intent, or because they are easily compromised

I try to explain what happens when someone trys to send an email to the domain you've registered.

Let's say you've registered the domain "example.com" at a domain name registrar (e.g. GoDaddy is a domain name registrar).

All domain name registrar (also known as domain reseller) I know, provide their own nameserver (also known as DNS server).

These nameservers keep the information about your domain. So if you want to add/change/delete records, you can do this at your domain name registrar.

For receiving email you need at least two records:

1. An A-record which points to the IP address of your server (e.g. mail.example.com -> 93.184.216.34)
2. A MX-record which points to this A-record (e.g. example.com -> mail.example.com)

You see, hMailServer hasn't done anything so far.

But hMailServer needs to known, that it is responsible for the domain "example.com". So you need to add this domain to hMailServer.

1. Get MX-Record of "example.com" -> mail.example.com *
2. Get A-Record of "mail.example.com" -> 93.184.216.34 *

Remember, email is reputation based. Its up to the receiving server to decide what to do based on their perception of your reputation. In my opinion, every address on the PBL is a bot and can safely be rejected without even receiving the message to inspect for spamminess. Furthermore, I also firewall block every single one I come across so they never even get a second chance to connect to my hmailserver.

I am not an expert on this but when you get a Domain from a Domain Registrar (ex. GoDaddy), usually the Domain will be registered and if you don't want to use the Domain as a website it can be 'Parked'. This Domain (ex. at GoDaddy) is set up in for example GoDaddy's DNS Servers. You then need to set up in for example GoDaddy's DNS Servers an A-Record which will point to the IP Address of your hMailServer Email Server. Then you are able to set up for example GoDaddy's DNS an MX Record which will point to the hostname of the A-Record you created which points to the IP Address of your hMailServer.

How you create these DNS records you would have to find out from your Domain Registrar. In GoDaddy for example, GoDaddy gives you access to their Zone File Editor. A Zone File is where the entries are which set these Records up for the DNS Servers. My Domain Registrar is GoDaddy and I learned how to do this by looking at the Zone File for my Domain (which is now Parked) and looked at how I was set up to use their Email Server and just substituted my own hostnames and IP Addresses for hMailServer. There is more to all this such as setting up your SPF, PTR, etc in DNS Records but this is the basics. I can't give you a complete tutorial.

Some Domain Registrars may set up these DNS Entries for you.

aight guys I used dynamic IP and created a host name, sent a test email and it did not end up in spam folder
yet mailtester still gives me a score of 0/10 , strange cus I know yahoo are very strict about filtering emails

Anyway this time I am going to test every now and then to see when it will drop back to spam folder (I assume it will)

anyway I decided to purchase a domain from GoDaddy... and I did so.. I got 1 year of use for 1$

a VERY brief summary
ICANN https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/w ... 2-02-25-en is the organisation that coordinates IPnumber and Nameing conventions (DNS gTLDs/TLDs) which will be availiable on the internet.
you can apply with ICANN and become an ICANN-accredited registrar so you can "register" domain-names. ( and then some registrars wholesale registration possibility to other companys like ISPs, hosting companies, operators, webbhotels and others )

IF you havent got an agreement with ICANN or business with a registrar or a sub-provider you cant register domainnames. ( thats the answer to your question "what prevents me from doing so" )

You can "come up with" any domainname but if you want to use it on the internet.. you use services provided by businesses on the internet to "register" it which is more like a rental agreement because you pay a yearly fee for usage as long as you want to use it, now you have to remember that internet is actually just a businessagreement between operators to carry traffic between them, and every resource used costs money and the providers can charge for their services.. and for the internet to ACTUALLY work there are some things that needs to be coordinated like the fact that if you want a domainname.. someone has to put resources in play for it to ACTUALLY work..
for more info you could always google with questions like: "why does domain names cost money"


If "you come up with" a name that you think are "the bomb", just register it with a registrar and feel free to put it "up for sale" to the highest bidder... you just have to pay the rent first yourself to get it working... ( it is a common business to register interesting name and try to get someone else to pay a shitload of money for it, it has been around since the 90s )
